Kalpeshwar – Rudranath Trek – Two Sacred Panch Kedar Temples in the Garhwal Himalayas
About Kalpeshwar – Rudranath Trek
Two Panch Kedar Shrines | Bugyals & Rock Caves | Panoramic Views of Nanda Devi, Trishul & Chaukhamba
The Kalpeshwar – Rudranath Trek is one of the most rewarding and spiritually rich trekking experiences in Uttarakhand. This trek takes you to two of the revered Panch Kedar temples — Rudranath and Kalpeshwar — offering a perfect combination of adventure, spirituality, and untouched Himalayan beauty deep in the Garhwal Himalayas of the Chamoli district. Unlike the busier pilgrimage circuits, these trails remain refreshingly uncrowded, making this an ideal journey for those who seek solitude alongside spiritual discovery.
Trek Route & the Bugyal Trail
This Kalpeshwar – Rudranath Trek package spans 5 days and 4 nights, starting from Delhi with an overnight drive to Sagar Village — the base camp for the Rudranath trek. The ascent begins with a gradual climb through dense oak and rhododendron forests, leading into breathtaking alpine meadows known as Bugyals. The trail to Leuti or Pannar Bugyal covers approximately 10–12 km and rewards trekkers with sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks with every ascending step.
Rudranath Temple – The Cave Shrine at 11,800 ft
The spiritual centrepiece of this trek is Rudranath Temple, uniquely set inside a natural rock cave at approximately 11,800 ft (3,600 m) — the only Panch Kedar where the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped. The temple's remote grandeur, combined with panoramic views of peaks including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba, creates a truly unforgettable spiritual and visual experience. The evening aarti at Rudranath, with hymns echoing across the alpine meadows against the backdrop of the Himalayan horizon, is among the most moving moments on any trek in Uttarakhand.
Kalpeshwar – Open All Year Round
The final highlight of the Kalpeshwar – Rudranath Trek itinerary is a visit to Kalpeshwar Temple in the serene Urgam Valley. Unlike the other four Panch Kedar temples, Kalpeshwar is open throughout the year — the only one accessible in winter — and requires just a short 1 km trek to reach. This ancient cave temple, where the matted locks (jata) of Lord Shiva are worshipped, offers a perfect spiritual conclusion to an extraordinary journey.
