Kedarkantha Trek - Uttarakhand's Most Beloved Winter Snow Trek
About Kedarkantha Trek
India's Favourite Winter Trek – Snow Trails, Frozen Lakes & Stunning Summit Views
The Kedarkantha Trek is one of the most famous winter treks in India, attracting adventure lovers from across the country for its snow-covered trails, breathtaking summit views, frozen lakes, and scenic Himalayan campsites. Located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarkashi district, the trek offers a perfect combination of adventure, natural beauty, and beginner-friendly trekking experiences reaching an altitude of 12,500 ft.
Journey to Sankri – The Base Camp
The journey begins from Dehradun with a scenic 210-kilometre drive toward Sankri village, the base camp of the Kedarkantha Trek, passing through Mussoorie, Naitwar, pine forests, river valleys, and charming Garhwali villages. Sankri is located inside Govind National Park and offers stunning views of snow-covered peaks, dense pine forests, traditional wooden houses, and a peaceful mountain environment that sets the tone for the trek ahead.
Juda Ka Talab – The Frozen Himalayan Lake
The trek from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab is one of the most scenic stages of the entire itinerary. The trail ascends gradually through dense oak and pine forests blanketed in snow during winter months. Situated at around 9,100 ft, this beautiful high-altitude lake becomes partially frozen during winter, creating a magical Himalayan landscape. According to local legends, the lake holds mythological significance connected with Lord Shiva. Camping near Juda Ka Talab with snowfall, bonfires, and starry skies is one of the most unforgettable experiences on this trek.
Kedarkantha Base Camp & Summit
Kedarkantha Base Camp sits at approximately 11,250 ft, surrounded by snow-covered pine forests and mountain ridges offering breathtaking sunrise and sunset views over the Himalayas. The summit day begins before sunrise — the climb becomes progressively steeper through snowy ridges and forest sections before rewarding trekkers with 360-degree panoramic views of famous peaks including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Draupadi Ka Danda, Rupin Valley, and Har Ki Dun Valley.
