Trek Overview
Hampta Pass - Kullu to Lahaul-Spiti Crossover Trek
About Hampta Pass Trek
Dramatic crossover from Kullu Valley to Lahaul-Spiti
The Hampta Pass Trek is one of the most dramatic and scenic crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas. Located in Himachal Pradesh, this trail connects the lush green Kullu Valley to the stark and barren landscapes of Lahaul–Spiti. This contrast makes the Hampta Pass Trek a popular choice among trekkers looking for variety, adventure, and breathtaking scenery.
Starting from Manali, the trek begins with a short jeep drive to Jobra. The trail from Jobra to Chika passes through dense pine, birch, and maple forests with the scenic Rani River flowing alongside. This first day's trek is ideal for acclimatization and warming up for the journey ahead.
Trek Route & Highlights
The next phase of the Hampta Pass Trek itinerary includes a gradual ascent to Balu ka Ghera, a vast open camping ground surrounded by towering mountains. From here, trekkers get their first glimpse of the Dhauladhar ranges. The trail becomes more alpine, with river crossings, rocky terrain, and panoramic Himalayan views.
The most thrilling day of the trek is the climb from Balu ka Ghera to Hampta Pass, standing tall at around 14,000 ft. The ascent is steep and requires careful footwork, especially on sections covered with scree and loose stones. However, the reward at the top — a grand 360° view of snow-covered peaks — makes it one of the most satisfying climbs in the Himalayas. After spending time at the pass, trekkers descend towards Sheagoru, a stunning riverside campsite.
Chandratal Lake - The Moon Lake
One of the unique attractions of the Hampta Pass Trek is the optional excursion to Chandratal Lake. If weather allows, trekkers drive from Chattru to the magical Chandratal, located at 4,290 meters in the Spiti region. Known as the "Moon Lake", Chandratal is famous for its crystal-clear blue waters and extraordinary backdrop of mountains.
The trek concludes with a scenic drive back to Manali, usually via Rohtang Pass (depending on weather conditions). With its mix of beautiful campsites, dense forests, river crossings, valley views, high-altitude passes, and Spiti landscapes, the Hampta Pass Trek is perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
This Hampta Pass Trek package includes experienced guides, meals, permits, camping equipment, and transportation, ensuring a comfortable and safe adventure. Whether you're seeking to experience the best Himalayan crossover trail, click mind-blowing photographs, or simply enjoy a peaceful escape in nature — this trek guarantees an unforgettable journey.
