About Har Ki Dun Trek
Valley of Gods - A journey through Himalayan paradise
Har Ki Dun Trek is one of the most captivating and spiritually significant trekking destinations in the Indian Himalayas, nestled deep within the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park in Uttarakhand. Often referred to as the "Valley of Gods", this ancient trail takes you through a mesmerizing landscape of lush green valleys, dense pine and deodar forests, sparkling mountain streams, and snow-capped peaks that have inspired trekkers and pilgrims for centuries. Rising to an elevation of 11,700 feet, Har Ki Dun offers an unparalleled trekking experience that combines natural beauty with rich mythological heritage.
The trek begins from the charming village of Sankri, which serves as the gateway to this extraordinary valley. From Sankri, the trail winds through picturesque mountain villages like Gangar and Osla, where traditional wooden houses and ancient temples transport you back in time. The Someshwar Temple in Osla village holds special significance, believed to be thousands of years old and dedicated to Lord Shiva. As you ascend through alpine meadows and rhododendron forests, the towering Swargarohini Peak dominates the horizon, believed to be the path taken by the Pandavas to heaven in Hindu mythology.
Why Choose Har Ki Dun Trek?
Unlike many high-altitude treks, Har Ki Dun maintains a moderate difficulty level throughout its 40-kilometer route, making it accessible to both beginners and experienced trekkers. The well-defined trail follows the course of the Tons River, one of the major tributaries of the Yamuna, offering constant companionship of gushing waters and pristine river crossings. The valley is renowned for its unique cradle-shaped topography, surrounded by majestic peaks including Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Ranglana, creating a natural amphitheater of Himalayan grandeur.
The best time to visit Har Ki Dun is during April to June when the valley bursts into colors with blooming wildflowers, or during September to November when the post-monsoon clarity offers crystal-clear mountain views. Winter treks from December to March transform the landscape into a pristine white wonderland, though the trail becomes more challenging. The trek is particularly famous for its diverse flora and fauna - the Govind Pashu Vihar sanctuary is home to Himalayan black bears, musk deer, snow leopards, and over 150 species of birds including the colorful Himalayan monal.
What Makes Har Ki Dun Special?
The camping experience at Seematra and Kalkattiyadhar is nothing short of magical. These high-altitude meadows offer panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and provide perfect stargazing opportunities under unpolluted night skies. The final approach to Har Ki Dun valley reveals a breathtaking amphitheater surrounded by glaciers and towering peaks, with the Maninda Taal lake adding to the ethereal beauty. Local folklore suggests this valley was once inhabited by the mythical inhabitants of heaven, and the ancient trails still carry whispers of those legendary times.
