Yulla Kanda Trek - Sacred Lake & World's Highest Krishna Temple in Kinnaur
About Yulla Kanda Trek
A hidden Himalayan trail to a sacred high-altitude lake
The Yulla Kanda Trek is one of Himachal Pradesh's more unusual and lesser-explored routes. Tucked away in the Kinnaur region, the trail leads to the sacred Yulla Kanda Lake and the Krishna Temple beside it, said to be among the highest Krishna temples anywhere in the world. It's a trek that mixes spirituality with genuine Himalayan adventure, and it works for both first-time trekkers and seasoned ones.
The Route Through Kinnaur
The trail winds through small Kinnauri villages, pine forests, and open alpine meadows, with traditional wooden architecture and apple orchards along the way. Compared to more popular Himachal treks, Yulla Kanda stays refreshingly uncrowded, which makes it appealing for travelers who'd rather skip the busier trekking circuits.
Yulla Kanda Lake & the Krishna Temple
The trek's centerpiece is the clear alpine lake sitting at around 12,500 feet, with local legend tying the spot to the Pandavas' period of exile. The temple by the lakeside draws both pilgrims and trekkers, giving the destination a quieter, more reflective character than a typical summit trek.
Best Time & Difficulty
The trek is best attempted between May and October, when the meadows are in bloom and the trails are clear. It's rated easy to moderate — no technical climbing is involved, though reasonable fitness helps, especially on the higher-altitude stretches near the lake.
A Quieter Himalayan Escape
Beyond the trekking itself, the route offers plenty of chances to camp under clear night skies and catch sunrise over the surrounding peaks. For trekkers looking for something a little off the beaten path — with culture, scenery, and a touch of spirituality all in one trip — Yulla Kanda is one of Kinnaur's better-kept secrets.
